Hi all. I am experiencing some difficulties in getting a medical certificate for my daughter that want to make some sporting activities. No at agonistic level, of course. She is 6 yrs old and want to start with some martial arts, like judo. She loves to do that it very much and she just started this discipline without any side effect at all. Anyway, some of you had experienced some negative effect in doing sport at these levels? I am interested in child cases, of course. What does it say the medical literature? I remember that in some scientific article I read, it refers that for child the main trigger is a simple infection, like flu. And for my daugher infact it happened so. I remember you that my daughter had no acute crisis since April 99, and she is taking Theophillyne daily. Thank you very much.

Dear alapenna: I'm very sorry to hear that your daughter is not being allowed to live as normal a life as possible. I just checked through the major articles on SCLS published last year (including the first two listed under Disorder Resources, which are very comprehensive), and none of them mention exercise as a trigger for episodes of SCLS. We have members of this community that are physically very active (see _rnuara_, who takes theophylline like your daughter, and _claude53_, who is on IVIG, both of whom do a lot of cycling) and they don't report having had any exercise-related episodes of SCLS. If those who are in a position to issue the health certificate for your daughter would like to see copies of these articles, write to me and I will send them to you.

Hi Arturo, thank you very much, your help is always precious. Actually, we are in contact with several doctors and only one agreed in giving this health certificate. So, my daughter can continue in doing sport for this year. Our concern was about the potential risks that were exposed by some doctors (those who refused to issue the certificate), so we want to deepen this question and share these information with them in order to have similar certificates in the future with no problem or The infos you mention are very useful to me and I'll bring them (article reference and abstract) to the doctors. I think they have access to these full articles, anyway if they should need, I'll contact you. Very useful to know that there are some of SCLS affected people who make even intense physical exercises. Thank you again, Alessandro

Arturo, could you send me the main articles you were referring to please? Doctors should find useful to read them, so I want to print them directly in full format. My email address is: alap2@libero.it Thank you very much, Alessandro
