I just had an appointment with Dr. Stephany Porter, a naturopathic physician. She is researching homeopathic and herbal remedies which may be able to support me if I ever have another SCLS attack. I'm on IViG, so I hope not to, but if I ever start getting those symptoms again, I want these alternatives to help support my body, along with the standard treatments available through my regular doctor. There are some promising possibilities. She's found a homeopathic remedy that helps with severe edema, hemorrhage and syncopy (blacking out). There are also a couple of herbs that are known to tighten up blood vessels. Dr. Porter will be looking into this further, making sure there are no contraindications and looking for further possibilities in treatment. Talking with her was such a positive experience. She's bright, has a quick mind, is curious and persistent, so just knowing she's on my side gives me a sense of support, comfort, and hope. Dr. Porter is interested in working with anyone who has SCLS who would like to see if any of the remedies she can recommend would be helpful. It may be particularly useful for anyone with a chronic leak. Her area of specialty is in cancer, so she has a lot of experience working with regular medical doctors on difficult cases, and is careful that any alternative remedies she recommends don't interfere with standard medications you may be taking. If you are interested, you can schedule a quick 5 minute phone call with her so you can get an idea of what she's proposing and whether or not you're interested. She can work with you by phone, so no need to travel to Maryland. She runs the Bodhi Clinic in Millersville, Maryland, phone: 410-923-8888 website: http://www.bodhiclinic.com/

Thank you for this information. I wonder if she would be interested with working with someone in another country(New Zealand) as I am not having much success here and am a chronic leaker. I have tried a few herbal remedies before I fly to help tighten up the blood vessels and I think they help.It is hard to tell.

Hi Windows, do you mind if I ask you what herbal remedies you use for the flying.

I used Paroven and butchers broom, I hope this helps. I start taking them about 4 weeks prior to a long flight, then I add sudamyl (prescribed by GP) and Tranexamic Acid ( also by GP) a few days prior. With this cocktail I do not vomit and black out on long hauls like I used to. I don't know which one of these helps the most and am too scared now to try taking anything different!

Hi Windows - I am pretty sure she would - you'd have to ask her, of course, but I can't see why she wouldn't. Here's her info again: Dr. Stephany Porter Bodhi Clinic Millersville, Maryland phone: 410-923-8888 website: http://www.bodhiclinic.com/ You could email her via the website, or call and then you'll most likely make an appointment to talk with her by phone. best of luck to you :-) Cathy
