Ever had kidney biopsy?

Did you or your child (affected with Dent) ever have a kidney biopsy? The main site of damage in the Dent kidney is the proximal tubule, however the glomerulus (the filtering portion) gets damaged as well even though it does not have the damaged channel. It contributes, likely a lot, to the overall kidney damage. This relationship is unclear and very interesting. We were asked to potentially collaborate with a center who has collected several kidney biopsy reports in Dent patients. We might be able to send the biopsy slides to one of the leading kidney pathologists in the US. Please let me know if there was a biopsy done and would you know the hospital involved. Thanks Lada

Hi Lada Does this involve UK as well? My son had 2 kidney biopsies - the first was too small for definite diagnosis though. The second showed FGGS.

Potentially, yes. How long ago was it? Would it be possible to get the slides for review? Lada

My son had a biopsy 25+/- years ago at Children's Hospital in Boston.

My son had it a biopsy when he was first diagnosed at the age of 3. This was the summer of 1995 at the Montreal Children's Hospital in Canada. The Dr. that ordered it was Dr. Atul Sharma (I believe he is now deceased). Reading a general report from Dr. Sharma on August 1995 about Daniel's condition, it states "a renal biopsy was done and demonstrated non-specific tubular ectasia and interstitial nephritis."

Thanks Minu. We have managed to get biopsy reports on quite a few patients and we are planning to publish a collaborative study with the couple of other centers. It will hopefully shed more light on Dent. Lada

Lada -- you could have access to my son's biopsies if you still want them. There are three (if I remember correctly). He has both FSGS and FGGS.

I believe I told Barb in an e-mail that my oldest son, Stephen, had a biopsy performed at Franklin Square. Since he has signed consent forms for you, you should be able to get the slides for your study.

My son had 2 biopsies. One one each kidney. I believe both were done before the Dent's diagnosis was made.
