IVIG side effects

I have been having a rough time recently and decided to share it hoping someone may be able to shed some light on it. I started IVIG last November on a 4 weekly basis over two days each time. I had a blood test as a base guide at the startand. In February this year, my ALT (or ALAT) liver enzymes had started to rise a bit, Each month they have gone up to a dramatic and dangerous level (1345) from the original (70). The specialist is talking about a possible liver transplant in the future. Has anyone else had a similar response from IVIG? Although my bloods do not read well, I do not feel as sick as one would think and except for several episodes of severe stomach pain, am feeling sort of frightened but OK. I did find an article on google (J Neurol 2003 Jul:250(7):818-21)that said there had been rare instances of liver enzymes being elevated after IVIG and it stated that this may possibly be associated with certian IVIG preparations. I don't want to put anybody off having IVIG as it seems to be the treatment of choice.

This is disappointing. I had hoped somebody may be able to shed light on this for me...

You might want to google the brand of IVIG you are getting for side effects; Previgen contains no sucrose and apparently brands that contain it have been known to cause "problems." I would think your doctors would be on top of this if you are having problems and I am no doctor. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. I received a similar comment from Dr Druey which was also very helpful. The liver enzymes continued to rise to 2000 and the high dose prednisone I have been prescribed is finally starting to take effect and reduce them somewhat. Phew. Pretty scary stuff! I hope the worst is over now
