SCLS and Surgery

Is there any info on negative effects of having surgery with SCLS? I am scheduled to have hip-replacement surgery tomorrow & I have been cleared by my primary doctor but with a stipulation concerning my SCLS. I have been receiving IVIG therapy for 14 months and have been told by my Hemotologist that IVIG should be of no concern. If the surgen has any concerns what do I tell him? I have been waiting for this surgery for over a year and would not want the SCLS unknowns to delay it. I heard that IVIG prior to surgery can be benificial in boosting the immune system. I NEED THIS SURGERY!!! ....Donn

To my knowledge, there is nothing in the literature that this surgeon could use to refuse operating on you. If he's so worried, let him give you an extra IVIG infusion during or right before the operation! And he can always call up Dr. Druey at NIH or Dr. Pecker at Weill Cornell and talk it over with them.

I have had many operations since my first attack with no problems at all. All the surgeons have been interested in my condition however have never expressed any concern about operating. Ruth Nolan NZ

Hi Donn. Just sending my best wishes. I hope you had your surgery, and that everything went well. Please update us when you have had some recovery time and are able. Ruth, thanks for your update. My husband is facing some plastic surgery to correct grafts on his fasciotomy sites, so I'm very interested to hear from anyone else with SCLS who has been through surgery.

My hip-replacement surgery was a success and I experienced no symptoms other than a little anxiety. I am allergic to many pain meds so it was uncomfortable post op, but I am home and feeling great! Thanks for all the information. ...Donn

That's great news, Donn! I'm glad that your surgeon didn't behave like an uninformed coward.

I have had three back surgeries a cholestectomy and a complete hysterectomy. I need a hip replacement a rectal prolapse/herniated perineum surgery and it appears as if I now will need something done to help the newest discovery of internal bleeding somewhere in my lower intestine (I will know more when my c.diff is no longer active and I can have my colonoscopy). I had only one doctor who refused to operate on me due to my SCLS. I was devastated and I think I must have taken the refusal to operate on my back personally. I was really thrown for a loop. It took me a while to figure out how to find another doctor. I ended up receiving a referral from my infectious disease specialist. He sent me to see a superior orthopedic surgeon when the previous surgeon bailed on me. The result of that particular back surgery is nothing short of a miracle! I'm finally free from the pain and disability resulting from my first failed spinal fusion surgery back in 2008. I receive an extra IVIG infusion prior to any surgery and the results are zero SCLS complications. So far so good. Congratulations on the hip replacement and I hope you are doing well!
